Seven witnesses in Flatwoods, West Virginia saw a three-metre figure with a spade-shaped head, glowing eyes, and a hissing gas that sickened them for days. The Air Force blamed a meteor and an owl. The witnesses never agreed.

The Flatwoods monster, also known as the Braxton County monster, Braxie, or the Phantom of Flatwoods, is an alleged humanoid reportedly sighted in Flatwoods, Braxton County, West Virginia, United States, on September 12, 1952. The encounter followed the appearance of a bright light moving across the night sky. In 2000, paranormal investigator Joe Nickell suggested that the light was a meteor, while the creature may have been a barn owl perched in a tree whose shadows made it appear as a large humanoid figure.
