Across every culture there is a name for it — the Old Hag, the Mare, the kanashibari. You wake unable to move, a weight on your chest, a presence at the foot of the bed drawing near. Science calls it sleep paralysis. Folklore insists the thing is real, and only your stillness keeps it from noticing you are awake. Whatever you do, seeker, do not let it see your eyes open.
