The Knockers Below

Miners across Wales and Cornwall spoke of the Knockers — spirits in the deep rock who tapped from within the walls. A friendly knock meant a rich seam; a frantic one meant flee, the roof was coming down. The miners left them food and never whistled underground. Those who mocked them were found at the bottom of shafts no one had opened.
