The Bell That Rings Itself

The church bell was removed after the war, the tower left empty. Yet on certain nights the village still hears it toll — once for each soul who will not see the year's end. The priest counts the tolls and visits the homes. He has never once been wrong, and he has learned never to count past the door of his own house.
